Dear Beard,
What would you say to someone who really loves beer and is thinking about actually trying to make some? Anything would be greatly appreciated as this is a big step I am thinking about taking. Thanks! ROGUE NATION ROCKS!!!
– John Solberg
Go for it! I would really suggest getting Charlie Papazian’s “The Complete Joy of Homebrewing” and start small – read the book, do a gallon batch, use an extract recipe, but most importantly have fun. As you’ll see when you read the book it’s best to “relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew!” And, don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.
Dear Beard,
Is there any other field of work that you have thought about besides brewing? Any other passions besides all things beer related?
– John Hale
I started my career in the early 70’s at Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, CA and worked there for about 12 years. I worked swing shift, which was great, but when I started homebrewing I realized this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I quit Hughes and went to Siebel Institute in Chicago, worked for Alaskan Brewery for 2 years, met Jack Joyce, and the rest is history. When I retire I’d like to become a Master Recycler.
As for other passions – my dogs, 2 Curly Coated Retrievers, and my wife. I love cycling. I pedal to work every day, rain or shine. I love the feeling of freedom, health and independence you have on a bike. I rarely even drive anymore unless I have to. I enjoy touring and this year will be my 5th time riding and fundraising for the Arthritis Foundation in the Amgen People’s Coast Classic. We ride the entire Oregon Coast – 363 miles.

Dear Beard,
What is your musical preference while brewing awesomeness??
– Matimus Hernandez
What soundtrack do you listen to while brewing?
– Robb Miller
I get up really early and start work at 6 am so I generally will listen to the Breakfast with the Blues show on KRVM, then maybe some jazz or bluegrass mid-morning either from CDs or ITunes then usually back to blues. I like a lot of different kinds of music but no rap.

Hi John, The beard concept is really awesome. Back in 1989 when my first child was born, he was born premature, and was only a 1 1/2 pounds. So he had to stay in the premature baby part of the hospital until his lungs developed more. I went on a vigil and would not shave my beard until he was at home with us. It took 2 1/2 months, but my beautiful boy finally came home. He is now 26 and he is real joy to us. So this Thanksgiving after reading your story, I am very Thankful! I appreciate you sharing your story.
